The company has asked for donations previously also, but this is the first time they are asking their Indian readers. The minimum donation will be Rs.108(you can pay additional Rs.25 if you want your full contribution to reach WMF-Wikimedia Foundation) and you can pay as maximum as you want to pay. The website also says they have been receiving “an average donation of Rs.1000”

But why Wikipedia is Asking for donation?

Wikipedia is the seventh-largest website in the world. It is a free portal for information provider and seeker which is operated by a community of volunteers doing the editing, collating and managing the content of the website all over the world. Since the company needs a significant amount of capital to maintain the global operations of its business the WMF-Wikimedia Foundation had to seek out and ask for donations. WMF is a non-profitable organization under which Wikipedia operates and they are trying to keep their independence and they feel it would be a loss for readers if the website is been commercialised.

I have made a decent donation, now it’s your turn to be one among the 2% of the reader please click the image:
